What does it mean if I have chest pain?

Chest pain can mean a lot of different things, some serious, others not. It depends on the type, location, duration, and associated symptoms.

Serious (Seek Medical Help Immediately)

These could be signs of a medical emergency, especially if the pain is:

  • Sudden, severe, or crushing
  • Spreads to the arm, jaw, neck, or back
  • Accompanied by:
    • Shortness of breath
    • Sweating
    • Nausea or vomiting
    • Dizziness or fainting
    • Rapid or irregular heartbeat

Possible causes:

  • Heart attack (myocardial infarction)
  • Angina (chest pain from reduced blood flow to the heart)
  • Pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lung)
  • Aortic dissection (tear in a major blood vessel)
  • Pneumothorax (collapsed lung)

Moderate Concern (See a Doctor Soon)

Pain that is recurring, dull, or associated with movement, breathing, or stress might not be immediately dangerous, but it still needs attention.

Possible causes:

  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or heartburn
  • Costochondritis (inflammation of cartilage in the chest wall)
  • Anxiety or panic attacks
  • Muscle strain
  • Pneumonia or pleurisy (inflammation of the lung lining)

Mild/Benign (Monitor)

  • Chest pain that’s clearly linked to physical strain or certain movements and improves with rest or pain relievers may be muscular or skeletal.
  • If it’s brief, sharp, and clearly triggered by breathing or certain motions, it may be non-cardiac.

What You Should Do:

  • If you’re unsure or if the pain is new or unusual, get checked out.
  • Call emergency services immediately if you suspect a heart attack or other serious issue.
  • For ongoing, mild, or unclear symptoms, a visit to your doctor is still important for diagnosis.
