Metabolic syndrome is a complex condition. The main components of metabolic syndrome include obesity, high blood pressure, high blood triglycerides, low levels of HDL cholesterol (Good cholesterol) and insulin resistance. Recently, metabolic syndrome is also called Insulin Resistance Syndrome.
There are no quick fixes for metabolic syndrome. Patients need to change the way they approach a healthy diet, increase their water intake, get enough sleep, exercise, stop smoking, manage stress and their overall wellbeing for life. Aim for slow steady weight loss. A regular walking routine can significantly improve metabolic syndrome patients’ health and reduce the risk of developing related conditions.
Heart-healthy lifestyle changes are the first line treatment for metabolic syndrome. A dietitian and physical therapist can offer significant help for each patient to find a tailored diet and exercise plan that works particularly for him/her. If healthy lifestyle changes do not meet expectations, patients might need medicines or surgery. Through lifestyle changes and medications, metabolic syndrome can be reversed.
Two diets are often recommended for metabolic syndrome patients:
- Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet.
- Mediterranean diet.
Several studies report beneficial effects associated with eggs, yogurt and nuts consumption on prevention and control of metabolic syndrome.
It is possible to prevent and reduce metabolic syndrome by using magnesium supplements.
On the other hand, Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with metabolic syndrome, and its related outcomes, including type 2 diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, myocardial infarction, and stroke.
The findings suggest that adequate intakes of folate, vitamin B6 and B12 are recommended for prevention of metabolic syndrome. A diet of foods rich in these vitamins is appreciated.
